From Accountant to Data Analyst: How I Changed My Career (No CS Degree Required)
The Moment I Knew I Needed a Change
I liked numbers. That part of accounting never felt like a chore. What wore me down was the repetition — the same monthly close, the same manual copy-pasting between spreadsheets, the same feeling that I was doing work a computer could do faster than me.
One afternoon, I automated a report I used to spend three hours building every month, just using Excel formulas and a pivot table. It took me twenty minutes. My manager asked how I did it. That was the first time I thought: maybe this is the skill I should actually be building.
Why I Chose Data Analytics (and Not Something Else)
I looked at a few options — digital marketing, graphic design, web development. Data analytics won because it was the closest bridge from where I already stood:
- I already understood numbers, spreadsheets, and business reports.
- I didn't need to learn to code from zero — I needed to learn to query and visualize data.
- Every industry needs people who can turn raw data into decisions, which meant more job openings than I expected.
What the First 6 Months Actually Looked Like
Month 1 — Excel, properly this time. I already used Excel daily, but I didn't actually know it. I learned pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH, data cleaning, and basic dashboards. This alone made me faster at my old job.
Month 2–3 — SQL and data logic. This is where it started feeling like a new skill. I learned to pull and join data from multiple tables, write queries, and think in terms of "what question is this data answering."
Month 3–4 — Visualization and storytelling. Learning a BI tool (Power BI) to turn raw numbers into dashboards that a non-technical manager could actually understand. This is the skill that made my work visible — not just correct, but readable.
Month 5 — A portfolio, not just certificates. I built three small projects using public datasets — a sales dashboard, a customer churn analysis, and a budget tracker. These projects were what I actually showed in interviews, not my course completion certificate.
Month 6 — Applying, interviewing, and one very lucky Friday. I applied to roles that listed "Excel + SQL + Power BI" as requirements, not "5 years of Python experience." I got two interviews and one offer.
What Actually Made the Difference
If I'm honest, it wasn't talent. It was three things:
- I picked a narrow, in-demand skill set instead of trying to learn everything at once (Excel → SQL → one BI tool, in that order).
- I built things, not just watched tutorials. Employers didn't care that I finished a course. They cared that I could show them a dashboard and explain the decision behind it.
- I had structure and deadlines. Learning alone, I kept postponing. Having a course with a schedule and an instructor to check my work is what actually got me to the finish line.
